But we do know he's big and black. Much like X. Ergo, X must be right.

Which guys got to be on the covers the most during that period?

I don't remember where I read it, but supposedly, Weider put Arnold (yes, I know, different time period) on the covers instead of Sergio because he would sell way more mags that way...

Not saying I have any real clue about what was going on back in the day, mind you.

I also think it sucks that Shawn Ray could not get a cover till later. It's not the public's fault. Someone in the boardroom somewhere makes those decisions.

LOL.

That's like saying the Civil Rights movements wasn't necessary because the "public" wasn't racist, just the guys hiring and firing people for jobs, the politicians making decisions on a grand scale, the restaurants that wouldn't serve minorities, the "colored only" water fountains, and the complete lack of accomplished and educated black men in popular media.....but "the public" was cool with the darkies!!

That's an overblown analogy and you know it.

I obviously understand the point you are trying to make but that is a sensationalist viewpoint, even for you.

Being on a magazine cover isn't a basic human right. Shawn Ray is well known for having a big mouth. Is it possible that he pissed off a few too many people who had decision making power? Or maybe the editor felt that he was too polarizing and wouldn't be as good for sales as someone else.

There's no way you know that Ray didn't get a cover because of racist people.

Shawn Ray's mouth wasn't even a factor until the late 90's. He didn't even speak up much before then. I followed his career pretty closely since high school...so no, I doubt his mouth is why he wasn't on a cover.

Besides that, my comment had more to do with the previous poster's belief that racist things happened but not because the public was racist, but that everything is the fault of business owners. That belief makes no sense...thus why I compared it blatantly to the Civil Rights movement.

It is as if people believe that because racism isn't a HUGE factor today, that this means things were always that way. To that, I would say that racial tension didn't really start to subside in this country until the mid 90's.

That means that YES, "the public" was largely racist n the 60's, the 70's, the 80's and then lesser so until the mid 90's on until today where it is even less.

Time is a progression, not quartered off sections in time.

Magazine editors didn't choose mostly white bodybuilders for the cover in the 60's-80's because they simply wanted to. They knew they would sell more copies that way because the majority was white.

To think otherwise is pretty damn naive.

But then, if it helps you guys sleep easier to walk around believing that no one was racist in "the public" since the 60's, go right ahead and snore easy.

That is exactly why he did it.

That is why it is retarded that the previous poster thinks they just did it for no reason and that they would sell the same number of mags with black guys on the cover.

hell, we had a poster not too long ago make a comment about how his friends asked if the bodybuilding world was being overrun by black people like pro basketball.

Imagine the reaction to seeing a premium mag in the store aisles with mostly black bodybuilders in it in the late 70's.

I'd have to say, Professor X made some major points backing up the initial accusation in this post! Even different photographers have told me they preffer to shoot more of that "All american guy" "white boy" look BECAUSE they can market it more..... I, have personally been drawn to any covers or clips I see with competitors such as Ronnie, Heath, Flex wheeler, and Toney Freeman etc. etc. etc..
