Let's admit it. Most gyms nowadays are Globo-type fitness centers. The military is no exception. Share with us the best gyms you know of. Include name of gym, location, and why it rocks. I will start it off. For those of us traveling between bases, this thread can alleviate a good amount of gym searching.

Name: Ramer Hall
Location: Camp Barrett, The Basic School, Quantico VA
Description: 3 full racks with platforms, 3 ordinary squat racks, ample bumper plates, 10+ pullup bars, wrestling mats, DBs up to 120, less than 10 cardio machines, no TVs. It's a small, no heat/AC, dirty gym but the training capacity there is incredible. Best gym on Quantico.

This is a gym that few people actually have access to, but it is def. worth mentioning.

I've been to dozens of Air Force gyms, some Army gyms and two Navy gyms. The best I've been to is at Robins AFB in Warner Robins GA--not hard core like those described above (come on, it's the Air Force), but ample free weights, benches, racks, etc. The worst gym was at the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia (since closed). Basically, it was two racquetball courts converted. Old, rickety, rusty equipment--it was awful. I'm told that's because the Navy spends all its money on its ships.

The Army gym in the fitness complex at Balad. Nice, dungeon-y feel, plenty of weight, close to the pool and track, and being AF, I was more motivated by wanting to shut some of the soldiers' mouths. It definetly beat the H6 gym.

The best military gym I've been to was an AF facility - McGuire AFB. It was big, had a ton of free weights, number of benches, racks, seated military presses, Cybex machines, chinning stations, etc. It beat the hell out of the Army's gym at Ft. Dix, which was tucked in at the end of the field house and contained one stationary bench and one movable, one set of rusty, loose DBs. I remember the new (1998) gym at Aberdeen Proving Ground being pretty nice.

Seen some great ones of the years, Navy's Athletic weight room next to the astro turf practice field was phenomenal, they also had some nice gyms with power racks, platforms, and bumper plates inside one of their dorms.

My favorite gym was at a COP in afghanistan, no cardio equipment, rusty weights, no a/c or heat and a phenomenal view.

I have two.

Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport California, had everything you needed and the scenery out the windows was awesome.

The Bldg. 26 gym at the Medical Center in San Diego.

The one in Jacksonville, FL was pretty sweet, if I remember correctly..that was years ago and I dont think I even knew what a deadlift was..:? But it was brand new with lots of racks and dbs..

The suckiest gym I'd have to say was in Brunswick ME and here in Pax river MD..
