Another Ab Thread-Train Abs Every Day?

I was released from the Army last Sept, and plenty of NCO's would tell me that your core is such a large muscle group, you can literally work them out every day.

Now, I don't know if this is just their ignorance speaking or what, but wouldn't that be an overload on the core? Maybe they were speaking strictly using body weight??

Why would you want to train your abdominals that often, just out of curiosity?

You CAN,but it's not necessary in order to have a strong core,and if you were to train it every day,in my opinion,you would certainly be doing more harm than good if you don't mix it up as much as possible-isometric (i.e. plank) twisting,targetting lower or upper abs or obliques as appropriate on different days,with different exercises,etc. instead of a total beasting every day.

doing say,sit-ups and crunches every day would seem a bad idea unless it was very specific,i.e. boxing/martial arts or correcting a severely lordotic spine.

It also doesn't make much logical sense to me that a "large muscle group" would need less recovery time.

If you wanna get an 8-pack you gotta work your abs EVERY day. Sometimes twice a day. And go really high reps to tone the muscle and target that belly fat.

yeah you can work it a ton. But that doesn't mean you should waste all day on core exercises if it's detracting from more productive lifts in the gym.

I do train my abs everyday, but I alternate on heavy standing ab work on my training days, and when I do recovery/extra workouts, I tend to do bw stuff like Hanging Leg Raises to build up work capacity and/or recovery.

its best to work the abs FIRST to really pre-exhaust the muscle and to build hyyoooge mass, and then do something like front squats after that to really tone it

I'd rather have my abs fresh to stabilize myself during the really heavy lefts so I don't end up dumping a few hundred pounds of weights.

I heard supersetting and really exhaust both your lower back and abs, and then instantly attempt a 1RM rack pull builds HUGE MUSCLES.

I challenge anyone who says it's OK to train abs every day, to provide evidence that the abdominal muscles are different to other skeletal muscle in such a fundamental way, that the normal rules of overload and recovery do not apply.

You can't train any muscle every day with any significant load, and expect continuous progress. The abs are in essence no different from other muscles.

The only muscle you can work hard every day is the heart. And possibly the intestines.

If you train them right, they will be sore for days, you won't even be able to do pushups. Train them right meaning 2x12 situps on the decline bench with a 120 lb dumbell on your chest.

An intelligent post,BBB,and I'm certainly not flaming your ass,just hypothesizing,but you could TRAIN them every day,in a way,but not necessarily TARGET them everyday.In other words,if you have a core workout one day and do squats the next day,surely they are being trained.Indirectly trained,but certainly trained? for their main function is to stabilise the spine, which they doing against a great load.
Sorry if that seems trivial.

With the greatest respect,would you not say that the abs are different fundamentally from other skeletal muscles in that they form part of an aponeurosis,supporting each other,and covering a rather large cavity with only the spine for 'backup' which is flexible also and constantly working significantally against gravity/poor posture and modern life in general?

I think you could train them daily,I'm not saying it's the wisest or the best way,certainly,but even if you target them every day,you could target say,the lower abs one day,isometrics the next,oblique/twisting movements the next day,then isometrics,then lower abs,then isometrics,and so on? I would prefer the question 'Can I do Core Stability every day?'
you could certainly do most isometric/yoga type moves every day.

But yes,in MOST cases,it is unnecessary and even counter-productive for most,depending on postural assessment,needs,etc.

Interestingly though,Bruce Lee trained his abs hard every day,with fairly high volume too.

And his abz were hawt!!

Not to say they wouldn't have been just as aesthetically pleasing with less frquency or volume though,or even more so.

Well,I bet you do,to a certain extent.
Is that you in those photos?
Do you do 'The Vacuum' or similiar?
I bet you practice activating your deep core muscles (TVA) isometrically on a regular basis,maybe without realising it,when posing on stage,and in the mirror most days,and walking down the street when you see your reflection,correcting your posture,and even more so when leading up to an event.

Congratulations.You are doing the worlds best ab exercise.
