Good article,
"This type of talk makes me want to at least partially blame the triathletes and marathon runners who use strength training as supplemental exercise, but don't understand the basics of exercise physiology. "
I read this as you blame the atheletes who lift but don't understand why they are lifting. And got pretty miffed.
However you might also being say that because the atheletes are doing high reps and are defined due to low bf% (due to loads of cardio). So ipso facto, to the first time lifter, the high reps are making them lean.
I have met a guy who refused to do reps that weren't travelling at a million miles a second with sets containing a minimum of 30 reps....I kid you not. |

Video Games: (Noun) Chronic time-wasting activities that sap your time and energy, and don't contribute to your health, wealth, or sex appeal.

Nice progress Nate!
So far I've gone from 150-190lbs in my time training.
Gotta love it!

Love the article Nate.
I'm a former skinny fat(ee?) myself, and that entire section is dead on without a doubt. Most of my friends from high school fall into the same category too- skinny fat, inactive, little sleep, a lot of video gaming, and infrequent eating (of fast food and junk).
Lift heavy shit! |

This is going to sound like a newbie question even though I've read about every article on here and have been lifting for over 2 yrs. But how did he keep the small waist? I am one of those "skinny-fat" guys because I'm always trying to gain weight (not because I'm not active) and my waist always seems to have "love handles". So my question is, obviously how do you gain the muscle mass and still keep the slim waist? Tried running, tabata intervals, stair climbing, cleaning up my diet a bit and no matter what I never can get rid of the love handles.
I have Rosstraining books, SS, PP, read elitefts, and have been for the past 2 yrs so I don't consider myself unknowlegable. BTW-I never had love handles when I started lifting, but then again I was skinny w/o much muscle. I've' gained about 20 lbs in 2 yrs. I'm 29 yrs old 175 at about 15-20% BF I'm guessing, and would like to get to 200lbs with about 10% BF by next november. Any advice on how to slim my waist or maintain my 32 would be nice. |

I agree.
From the article:
You'll also get some isolated work for your beach muscles - biceps, triceps, delts, abs - to put the finishing touches on your physique.

I liked the time wasting activities section the best. I thinks its important to evaluate these things and your method and Ideas seem balanced. |

Nate, I am 17 (6'1, 190) and my body grows well with the exception of my arms. If you don't reccomend direct isolation work, should I just do low rep sets of BB curls, or have an entire arm day? |
