How do you determine how much weight to use in these? Just experiment? |

First, I had to jump in here and say holy hell that woman on the bench (black bikini- Pauline maybe?) is HOT. that body is perfection IMO. Just wanted to send some praise from one woman to another.
Oh and THANKS a bunch for the new ideas. I love tabatas and there are some GREAT options in there. Having a good rotation of options makes it a little easier to deal with mentally too. The change of pace is really good for keeping you at your best. |

The first time I did a Tabata workout I went simple and just did squats, in the basement. How bad could it be right? Bad idea...Those steps were brutal. I had to stop and go back down, which was worse than going up, my legs were shaking so bad lol, what a pump though.
There are competitions you can actually compete in. I think you say what excercices you want to do and how many. Then you try to get that number without going over or under or some such. Kind of like bracket racing in the 1/4 mile dragsrip.
Thanks coach T.

Nick-
How much rest do I take in between rounds (sets)? In other words, after a four minute tabata round how long do I rest before going for another 4 minutes?
Thanks |

there isn't any way to calculate the amount of weight to use so, yes; just experiment.
if you want to use me as an example.
with "ok" conditioning I was able to use 85lbs for a barbell tabata last winter. not sure how you can relate to that, but at the time i was benching 315, front squat 325 and pulling 500. it's really hard to figure out by these numbers but it 'might' help?
use really light weight. lol, shit hurts. |

24-48hrs.
it's only meant to do once.
do it once and ask if you wanna do it again? if you do, you're cheating/not using enough weight. |

Good article, but I completely disagree that somebody needs to progress to a full tabata over 12 weeks unless they are horribly, horribly out of shape. An individual that works out with consistency should be able to perform a full tabata with no issue. |

I agree with Steel Nation.
Also, I thank Nick T for this great article. I've been wanting new, fun Tabata workouts for a while now, so thanks a lot for giving it to me. |

If you can stand after a tabata workout, then you didn't do a tabata workout!

I like this system. I would really like to use this with my kids especially with the bands or no weight at all ( wrestler and gymnast). Good stuff. It looks fun to them until they do it. Then I just have to convince them it's only 4 minutes. Keep up the good work!
As I continue to read through. This is like one set in 4 min. then repeat 6-8 times? Is this based on how many exercises I choose to do?

I am a big fan of doing Tabata's using the front squat, based upon Dan Johns recommendation. It has helped my leg and core conditioning immensely. I believe Dan only recommends doing them with squats...but I think you made some good points in your article about why to switch it up.
I am looking forward to trying these Tabata variations.
Great article Nick, thanks. |

Sorry about posting the same thing two seconds later. When I read the workouts it doesn't read 4 min. How do I do 6-8 bouts I need some clarity. |

There is really no "right" answer for this. But, I like my athletes to use a load that allows them to achieve roughly 1 rep every 2 seconds.
Thanks for your question!

Rest 2-5 minutes between full Tabata rounds depending on your fitness level and recovery ability.
Good luck with your training!

Yes, some athletes can just bang out a full Tabata on Day 1. But, how long does it actually take them to recover from it and how did rounds 5-8 compare to rounds 1-4?
I provided those progressions for two reasons -
1. There are many diverse fitness levels who read TMuscle, not everyone can start at the same place or can safely manage a full Tabata. No one said you MUST use theses progressions. But, I want EVERYONE regardless of fitness level to benefit from my articles - Not jut the elite athletes!
and
2. There's doing a Tabata and then there's doing it well. Just jumping into full Tabata's does work, but not for everyone. I've found those progressions I featured in the article guarantee maximal performance (intensity) each round within a given Tabata. And, they ensure a much faster recovery time.
Plus, I've been known to do multiple Tabatas in a single workout. You need progressions like this in those instances. That is unless you don't want to be stuck in bed for the next two days from soreness and exhaustion? :-)
Best regards!

First off, many thanks for your kind words earlier!
Now, a Tabata is 8 rounds of 20 seconds on and 10 seconds off. So, one round or "Bout" as you call it last 30 seconds. That translates into 6 "bouts" lasting only a three minutes and 8 "bouts" is a full, Four minute Tabata.
Go it?
Hope this helps!
Best regards!

I agree. When I first tried them I did 6 rounds of front squats, and then it took my friend "coaching" me to get the last 2 rounds as my brain was more interested in stopping the insane shit i was doing.
I think it can also take time to dial in a good working weight. If you go to heavy you die way to soon, and if you go to light, you're still standing at the end. So it could take a week or two to dial the weight in.
