The first time I did tabatas was when Dan John wrote his article.
Ended up doing 119 front squats with 95lbs and promptly threw up my pre workout meal lol |

Love the article, but would like to konw if I can use this for lagging body parts, whilst slimming down for a competition? Eg: Do chest in the morning. Four diffrent programes, 3 heavy for chest - last program belongs to back ( being lagging part) 4-5 sets heavy, compound. Do back again that same afternoon, but nog heavy, intense. A full, heavy back routine follows later that week. Can I incorparate this method on my lagging body parts during the "intense" workouts to stimulate the muscle and also help with fat loss? Use diffrent exercises for the muscle group. This would sure beat cardio hands down! |

Nick, really appreciate the article, thanks, especially the resistance band/cable tabatas. Sure would like to see some more of those, as well as maybe a couple for the TRX type suspension trainer, hint, hint, pretty please ;). I know there's always bodyweight stuff, but I really like these two items 'cuz you can literally take, and use, them anywhere. Hotel room, office, empty classroom, outdoors at the park, etc. Twenty minute break anywhere in your day almost wherever you are and you can warm up, kill yourself, cool down/recover, and continue on your way. Thanks again for this and your other articles too. |

I like it when an article has a good combination of training images/vids along with a motivational muscle shot and then a bunch of hot lady fanservice!
I am curious about the punching combination in that, when it mentions rows, is he talking about doing a bent over row, or some kind of standing pulley one?
Bent over wouldn't be bad since it would train your back whereas perhaps punching trains abs? I know boxers train them but I thought it was for getting hit. |

Thanks for your positive comments!
To answer your question, I think Tabatas are much better used for the purposes of fat loss and conditioning over building muscle to lagging body parts.
That said, the upper-body dominant Tabatas I provided do make for great "finishers" to a complete upper-body strength workout.
Best of luck with your training!

Many thanks for your kind words!
I will be glad to post more of my custom Tabatas on my website at http://nicktumminello.com/
Not trying to get in a shameless plug for myself. But, I doubt TC will go for another Tabatas article from me since I've already done one. You never know I guess?
Also, on the TRX - I love the TRX but haven't had too much success combining it with the Tabata protocol. This is simply because theres not many movements you can do on the TRX that allow for high speeds.
Thanks again for your comments and best of luck with your training!

To answer your question - you can do either Bent over or standing rows when using a JC Band like the ones featured in the article.
Best regards!

Enjoyed the article. How effective would it be just doing eight rounds with a jumprope and how does a tabata compare to a sprint workout? |

Great question!
Sprints are always a good choice of conditioning. I personally don't use jump rope tabatas because folks seem to mess up too often. But, I do use jumping rope as a form of exercise - just not tabata style.
Good luck with your training!
