Why I Don't Want To Power Clean 315 Pounds
Do you think that motivation is a fundamental issue when it comes to successful exercise or athletic training programs?
I don't. In fact, I KNOW it isn't!
How can I say this? Easily, often, without hesitation, and with supreme confidence.
Look: You are exactly where you want to be right now. You've already taken the steps necessary to achieve your station in life, and not one bit more. And you're completely satisfied with that station in life. Even if you know you could be much leaner, stronger, faster (or whatever trait or quality that applies most to you) than you are.
Now you might say "Well, that's not true! I know someone who is 100 pounds overweight and he's miserable!"
To which I say, no, he's satisfied. Clearly, the benefit he's deriving from his behaviors still outweighs the drawbacks, or else he'd change those behaviors!
OK, let's use me as an example. I'm reasonably lean and my goals revolve around physical capacity: strength, speed, and so on. And I've got a particular affection for the power clean... probably because I'm fairly good at it relative to other lifts. Anyway, I sometimes catch myself telling someone that I'd "love" to be able to power clean 315 pounds (my current best is 275 pounds).
But whenever I say that, I'm lying. Why? Because, quite simply, if I REALLY wanted a 315 power clean, I would have already taken the steps necessary to accomplish that particular feat!
Now, if I wanted to find excuses for my inability to clean 315, I could probably find them. I'm 46 years old. I've had several very serious knee surgeries. I'm ectomorphic. I don't use performance-enhancing drugs. I got picked on a lot when I was in elementary school. Come to think of it, this could end up being a pretty big list!
I'm not really interested in excuses though. The fact is, I'm healthy, knowledgeable, athletic, my profession provides me with ample time and energy to train, I know lots of great Olympic weightlifters and coaches, I have a great gym right in my home....OK, this can potentially be a bigger list than the excuses list!
Which leads me to the following conclusion:
I don't really want to have a 315 power clean.
Man, that really hurt. But you know what? It's absolutely true. I simply cannot escape the plain fact that I have not done what it takes to achieve a 315 clean. Perhaps, someday I will, but for now, it's obvious to me that the enjoyment I get from not having to train in a way that would permit me to clean 315 outweighs the enjoyment from being able to actually do a 315 clean.
And that's OK! And there's a great lesson here: maybe some of your goals aren't appropriate for you, because they don't really mean enough for you to take action.
Question: What's your #1 goal? Right now. Do you have one? Statistically, you probably don't. But if you do, here's what I'd like to have you consider: How important is that goal to you? Have you arranged your entire life in a way that supports your accomplishment of that goal?
I certainly haven't (in the case of the 315 pound power clean).
This article is primarily meant to inspire some self-analysis, not to provide hard and fast answers. However, if you'd like some avenues to pursue some serious reflection, here are a few:
1. Develop self-reliant behavior? create the mindset that all of your limitations are self-imposed (because they almost certainly are)
2. Get out of your comfort zone, and find a way to enjoy it. When your stomach is growling because you're hungry, think "Perfect! This is what I need to experience if I'm going to drop that extra bodyfat!"
3. Find out what works, and then do more of it. Find out what's derailing your efforts, and do less of that.
4. Cultivate dissatisfaction. After all, that's why you're where you are now- you're satisfied with it
5. Seek out and cultivate empowering personal relationships. The people you spend the most time with have a profound effect on your life. Make sure it's a profoundly POSITIVE effect.
I hope this article has been instructive for you.
Perhaps you're thinking that the psychology of motivation is a lot more involved than the way I've presented it here. Of course, people who are excuse-makers always think that way. As long as you've got enough reasons why you can't succeed, you never will.
NOTE: This is an excerpt from my nifty little e-book The Unnatural Athlete. If you'd like a free copy, call my office at 800-519-2492 and we'll send it right over to you!

Charles - I think that this is absolutely outstanding, extremely concise, hard hitting and applicable for nearly every aspect of life. While the concept of personal accountability and having single minded purpose may appear to be fundamental to many of us, the way in which you framed the fact that we all have exactly what we want and why we have it is right on the money - as always, your insight and balanced philosophy is greatly appreciated. I'm forwarding this on to a number of friends and co-workers. Thanks. |

This really hits home and it right online with a truth Ive come to lately about carrying around bit more fat than I wanted to. I revamped diet, training and supplement intake to achieve the goal of dropping body fat. Good stuff as always Coach.
On the e-book issue I would love a copy but scrounging up the calling card mins to call from Afghanistan would be a bit much for me at the time. Any chance of getting one through other means? |

Great advice. Thanks.
I'm curious as to what your vertical leap is especially with that 1RM of 275lbs? That's a damn impressive power clean. |

Insightful. It's always a pleasure to hear what you have on your mind, especially because you put your thoughts down in a very straightforward, simple (not simplistic) way. And that always makes me think.
I will definitely be calling your office today. Thanks for the offer. |

What do you say to the people who struggle and strive and don't achieve their goals. What if your initial goal had been to power clean 600? Did you fail to do it just because you didn't really want to clean 600?
I agree with your general theme that you need to be dissatisified and you need to keep challenging yourself to achieve more, but there comes a point when other variables kick in |

Dear Mr. Staley,
I am cuurently in Afghanistan and I just called your number not more then 15 secs ago and a very sexy french accented voice claiming it belonged to Monaco just informed me that, the particular noumber I was trying to reach is free only in the US and that I need to do God knows what to get through.
Now i love a sexy french woman as much as the next guy but if you dont mind , would you please send me the e-book.
If you prefer I can message or PM you my email address.
I would appreciate it , if not I still think you made a beautiful point.

I absolutely appreciate your point- there ARE upper limits. However, I'd wager that for 90% of us, failing to reach a goal has more to do with factors we can control rather than those we can't control....

Wow! Conversely, the heaviest I've ever power cleaned was about 175lbs at a bodyweight of 185 lbs but my vertical leap is about 30+ inches.
I guess it all depends on specificity and what you practice the most. I practice jumping MUCH more than I do power cleaning and when I do power clean it's usually more of a 30-60% of 1RM for more bar speed.

Yup, specificity rules the day. I'm actually pretty slow-twitch (as soon as they discover a new fiber-type that's slower than Type I, that's actually what I am!), but pretty efficient on the clean.

If you were trying to increase your vertical, how would you go about doing that?

Awesome Awesome, Awesome.
Soo true.
I cant believe how many people tell me they want to bench 400. I tell them they can do it easy. Eat like a big boy, follow a sound training program based on sound principles and pay your dues. Oh yeah you need to lift something heavy every now and then too.
Then they say no matter what they do they just cant do it...
After further discussion you realize that they weigh 185 and dont want to lose their six pack.
I remember the WSB crew saying that every man can squat 700lbs. And I believe it's true. Soo many people challenge me on this. But it is true.
If you wanna squat 700 or a grand or whatever are you prepared to sacrifice like is needed When I built my squat to a near 700lbs, I wanted it bad. I ate like a machine, trained balls out, sacrificed my cardiovascular health, sacrificed a lot. I packed on the pounds, forgot about the swimsuit body and dedicated myself to the pursuit. Wanna bench 6 and squat 9 read dave tates article about reasons to be big, or whatever it was called, read his big woof article about why do we do this.
Be prepared to have your spouse wipe your butt, be prepared to have some surgeries, be prepared to get winded very easily, be prepared to sacrifice. When you have a drive for something so deep, you will do anything. Dont wanna sacrifice all that then I guess you dont really wanna squat 7,8, or 9. As Kelly Bagget says "Shit or get off the pot"
Well thats my rant. Thanks for the great post charles |

I'd probably choose different parents...
That not withstanding, I'd jump a lot with various loads using bodyweight and X-Vest work. Yeah, I'd still squat, clean, etc., but jumping would be the CORE activity, lifting would be the secondary activity (for ME)

Excellent article, thanks...kind of--and don't get a swole head here--reminded me of what some old Greek said about doing the right thing: if you know it's right, you won't have to force yourself to do it; you'd have to force yourself to not do it. If what you're doing takes ungodly willpower, you're probably not too sure about it.
And excellent customer service from Julianne, who sent me the e-book with the condition that I post here that she does NOT discriminate against Canadians! As she said, "It's not your fault!" Magnanimous and then some.
