I tried looking at the British Weight Lifting Association website, but it's no good. They seem to have every single thing *except* for local club details.

Nevertheless, try giving them a phonecall. Weightlifting tends to be a modest fraternity in which everyone more or less knows everyone.

Giles Greenwood in Bethnal Green in London is quite good.

He holds the British records for snatch and c&j in the 105+ class. He's also a really nice guy and runs the classes for next no cost for the trainee.

still try contacting him even if you can't make the classes, there may be a work around.

A lot of coaches will meet you half way if you're willing to go the extra mile. Sure it doesn't always happen, but you don't know until you ask.

No real coaching fee just a membership fee
£35 for competitors, must compete in 2 comps or help out at 2 comps a year, helping being going to setup/ load/ scorebored etc
£65 or so for non competitor fee

You pay the leisure centre £5.80 or so to use the facility but we have exclusive use on a Mon and Wednday from 6 till 9pm onwards or whenever we finish. Other times randoms can use it but theres always space as it's never used.

I guess if you don't join as a members you pay the leisure center to use the facility and then I think £5 or so whenver you rock up. But once you go as many times for the 'fee' level I think you just get membership instead and don't have to pay anymore.

If you're anywhere near cambridge, you could go see dave morgan (keith's brother) at http://beyourbest.uk.com/ who has lifted at 3 olympics and 6 commonwealths. I don't know what he would charge....

PS: You should check out his lifting video if only to see the BEST 70's moustache in the world.

PPS: obviously stuart mcgill is my nomination for 'tache hall of fame.

You would be subjected to the leisure center fee of £5.90 or whatever it is and then to pay a bit to the club to use the weights. My coach would most likely charge £5 per session but he prefers people to join and to eventually compete. 2 comps a year isn't too bad imo and then you pay the cheaper competitors fee. The £££ goes towards the upkeep of the club and the club is not run for profit because my coach is retired now. Not rich but not poor and he loves weightlifting. He's been coaching for about 45yrs.

Your not kidding right? I@ve known keith for about 9yrs and I didn't know him and Dave were BROTHERS! wtf?! I thought they just shared the same surname! wtf?! Hilarious!

Dave's moustache was OUTRAGEOUS! He came 4th in one of the Olympics.

Any weekend mate.

I'll pm you my number to make sure I am there. This month is fairly busy. Next week is the English so no one will be there on Saturday, the following is a comp so the next time the gym is free is in March.

I'd second the call of Keith Morgan. I did some work experience with him and he's a great, old school coach. Seeing him work with O-lifters, martial artists, the england womens goalkeeper and some NFL guys (all at once, I might add!) was awesome.

Failing that, try the UKSCA. Their accredited strength & conditioning coaches are all qualified to coach O-lifts.

I did some work experience with Keith about 18 months ago (which cost me nothing) and he said i could train at the gym if i wanted to. Now, i don't know if that's the case for everyone; there's probably a fee for just using the gym generally.

Some advice from my very limited experience of being at Crystal Palace with keith: be humble! he's coached olympic athletes for years, and comes across as grumpy (he's actually a nice guy once he's sized you up a bit) so if you are lucky enough to train there, keep your head down and do what you're told.

hope that helps!

Yes thanks!

Yeah i got that grumpy, 'checking me out' vibe when i spoke to him on the phone! - Don't mind that to be honest.

I should be going down there this week so will report back the experience! :-)

Thanks

haha standard Keith! He's like that at first as he's very busy. Once you have shown your serious and want to train and get on it he will warm to you.

He's a very good guy imo.
